We've been blending bioethanol into our petrol on a routine basis since 2005. Bioethanol is a renewable petrol component and helps us reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the petrol we sell.
5% bioethanol blends
We include up to 5% bioethanol in all the petrol we manufacture - from our main grade (95 octane) petrol through to our performance petrols, Tesco 99 Octane and motorsport fuels.
Bioethanol, itself an oxygenate with an octane rating of 135, is used to increase power output in these performance fuels as well as help reduce their carbon emissions.
In our mainstream fuels, we are restricted in the amount of bioethanol we can use by the European petrol standard, BS EN 228, which permits a maximum of 5% bioethanol in petrol. The European standard bodies are currently discussing increasing this amount, potentially to 10%, and when this happens we will be able to increase the percentage of bioethanol we use.

E95 in buses
We supply a speciality product known as E95 for use in buses. This is comprised of 95% bioethanol combined with a bespoke additive package. E95 is designed specifically for use in certain models of diesel-engined buses, which can be converted to run on the fuel.
E95 offers bus operators an opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint significantly by using a high percentage of renewable fuel.
If you would like to discuss trialling E95, please contact Ewan Alexander on 020 7404 7700 or email.
